Glasgow – Photos of the Week – Glasgow University and their new Buildings

This weeks photo(s) come from our beloved Glasgow University and their huge building project (this one specifically is the James McCune Smith Learning Hub) that started some time ago, and will go on for some years yet.

These concern themselves with the new buildings / renovations in University Avenue and whilst not my taste, do seem to have given it a fresh look; although at times these type of things, do tend to date quite fast.

Glasgow Photo of the Week

One of these weeks, will start a look at the various churches we possess in Glasgow, so as a teaser, what about this photo of one former, and one current church using a zoom lens even!

Websters Theatre and St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral

And a more close up shot:

The first is a previous Church of Scotland, but now a theatre, events centre, whilst the second is the current Scottish Episcopal cathedral of the Glasgow and Galloway diocese.

The former having the third thinnest steeple in all of Europe? Or so I was told in the past.

Glasgow, Woodlands – New Cubes Installed?

Have you ever just wandered, this time to go into town, and then something, and I mean something, just strikes your eye?

This happened today when I was confronted by a series of glass cubes, temporary in nature in the Woodlands / Kelvingrove area.

Cubes on the corner of Eldon and Park roads, West End

The area where they are located is actually both in front of the north exit to Kelvingrove Park, and in front of St Silas Episcopal church. Perhaps they will be used by either, or if they have it this year, the Gibson Street Gala, which is normally only up the road by about 50 metres, and usually takes place each year’ish, every June for a few days (or a day?) at about the same time as the West End Festival runs; though I am not too sure.

Ziques and their new Terrace

Look at these photos, superb!  No, it’s not in New York, or even in Europe, but here in the West End of Glasgow.  Ziques, a newly refurbished café / restaurant, is now fully equipped with an outside terrace, that also(!) faces the Sun (when it actually shines in this part of the world).

Glasgow’s Tenements – Hyndland

Continuing the theme that shows off some of the truly stunning, Victorian tenements that we have to offer in Glasgow, I took a walk in the West End (again!) of the city, to the Hyndland quarter.

Thereupon, Kingsborough Gardens, complete with private park, was meandered through. What a world class street! And the hooses (Glasgow slang for “houses”) were amazing!

Equally, there exists a private park in the centre, between both sides of the two lanes; picturesque, subtle, practical – and I just love, the use of the word “proprietors”!

Glasgow’s Tenements – Dowanhill

Another day, and why not more photos from Glasgow, in this case concerning the wonderful tenements that we possess here in Glasgow, in so many different neighbourhoods.

These happen to be in the Dowanhill area (more on this area in the coming weeks), and are of the “red” sandstone variety, which is interesting, as there are also many of the “light brown” variety – that according to many tend to shed their sand quicker or be a little more brittle, which I believe is true.

My opinion is that I prefer the red type, particularly when matched with black window frames – unbeatable!

Quakers in Glasgow – Meeting House & Cemetery

A quick walk about both Partick, near to Partick Train station, and Charing Cross, near Charing Cross station, will have you locate both the Quaker Meeting Rooms and an ancient Quaker cemetery gifted to Glasgow, that has not been used since 1857. An interesting history, can be found here:

And as for the cemetery in Partick, please see below, several photos.

The week ahead

The week will finally show what this blog is capable of!  First, some photos from another neighbourhood here in Glasgow, then some church photos (a new series), music, film, TV of the week, and a look at a “first hit, last hit” segment, this time featuring REM.

But first, take a look at this street art, from an unknown “Banksy” in Glasgow;  seen in the Hillhead area.

Glasgow – Photos for the Week

What a beautiful sight!  The Botanics in the West End of Glasgow.  I believe the glasshouse is based on Kew Gardens in London?

Though with a recent cold spell (about -3 last night) it was chilly, but still sensational in the sun; though there was  a VERY small amount of flurries about mid-day.
